EASA ATPL (A/H) Conversion
Our organisation has already helped hundreds of pilots across six continents to convert their ICAO-compliant licences into EASA licences. We assist all pilots, regardless of their nationality or type of pilot licence. Whether you need to convert an ICAO ATPL to an EASA ATPL, transfer an instrument rating or obtain a PPL, Cranfield Aviation Training School GmbH is specialised in conversions and strives to make the process as simple as possible. We represent our students’ interests before the aviation authority and act as a point of contact for all parties involved.
Requirements
ATPL A
An ATPL-A issued in accordance with ICAO regulations can be converted to an EASA ATPL-A in accordance with the rules of EU Regulation 2020/723. The prerequisites for this simplified procedure are:
- 1500 hours total flying experience on aeroplanes
- of which 500 hours as PIC under supervision
- or 250 hours as PIC
- or 250 hours, of which at least 70 hours as PIC and the remaining hours under supervision
- 200 hours of cross-country flight, of which at least 100 hours were flown as PIC
- 75 hours of instrument flying, maximum 30 hours on the simulator
- 100 hours of night flying as PIC or co-pilot
- A valid type rating for a multi-pilot aircraft (transport aircraft)
ATPL H
An ATPL-H issued in accordance with ICAO regulations can be converted to an EASA ATPL-A in accordance with the rules of EU Regulation 2020/723. The prerequisites for this simplified procedure are:
- 1000 hours of total flight experience on helicopters
- including 350 hours in multi-crew flight operations
- 250 hours as PIC or
- 100 hours as PIC and 150 hours as PIC under supervision, or
- 250 hours as PIC under supervision in multi-crew flight operations. The EASA licence will then be restricted to multi-pilot flight operations until the 100 hours as PIC have been completed.
- 200 hours of cross-country flight time, of which at least 100 hours were flown as PIC or PIC under supervision
- 30 hours on instruments, maximum 10 hours on the simulator
- 100 hours of night flying as PIC or co-pilot
- A valid type rating for a helicopter operated in multi-crew operations
Licence conversion procedure
Provided that the above requirements are met and can be proven, no theoretical or practical training is required. Unfortunately, EASA requires candidates to pass the theoretical ATPL examination. This involves passing 13 subjects at EASA ATPL level. Candidates have 6 examination sittings and 4 attempts per subject to pass the examination. ATPL training is our core business and we are happy to provide advice and assistance. Once the theory exam has been passed in full, a valid EASA Class I Medical has been issued, a radio licence has been granted and English language proficiency has been demonstrated, the practical exam can take place. This is conducted by an EASA examiner on an EASA-approved full flight simulator that replicates the aircraft specified in the existing ICAO ATPL. The aviation authority then issues a full EASA ATPL with the type rating on which the ATPL examination was passed.
Conversion of a frozen ATPL, CPL or PPL
If the above requirements are not met, a CPL with or without IR or a PPL can also be converted to an EASA licence. In this case, you will need our regular ATPL or CPL course, and an ATO for practical training must develop an individual programme for practical training. For this purpose, we can recommend FlyAviators with locations in Hanover, White Waltham, UK, Belgium or Merritt Island, FL.
Dates
There are no fixed dates for this course – you can start the conversion at any time.

After the Course
Practical Training
Practical training is not required. Once the theoretical examination has been passed in full, the ATPL skill test can be taken, which we are happy to organise on an EASA-certified simulator. The costs for this vary depending on the aircraft type and amount to approximately €2,500 for the A320 or Boeing 737 types.
